After reading a request for pictures to accompany food descriptions, I have a new mission over the next few days. Be on the lookout for some pictures of Mexicos many culinary treats.
Following a long day in the archive, I set out for the Museum of Mexico City housed in an 18th century palace. The photos don't do it justice, unfortunately. There was a very interesting exhibit of maps from the museums archive that spanned the period of European-indigenous contact through the early twentieth century. The former workshop of locally famous painter Joaquin Clauselln occupied the fourth floor. It was a beautiful floor to ceiling, four-sided, impressionistic mural painted as though it were a mosaic of many smaller scenes. No pictures allowed there so you'll have to let your imagination do the work.
On the way home, I worked up quite an appetite for comida corrida at a stand in the neighborhood where I'm staying and it was delicious. Five mini tacos cooked to order in front of you and filled with chopped onions, cilantro, cecina, then covered with salsa roja (tasted like it was made with chipotle peppers). For dessert, some pan dulce fresh from the bakery. Well worth the wait (this was lunch around 3:30), and very inexpensive (about $1.50 US). Thinking of starting my own show that beats Rachel Rays by about $20 per day...
Of course I cant end today without expressing some disappointment at last night's game against Costa Rica. The silver lining was that I met some locals at the bar where I watched the game and they didn't give me too hard a time about the loss (of course they do love to see the US lose). Going back for the Mexico v. El Salvador game on Saturday evening.
Thats all the news for now. I should have a lot more pictures after a weekend of tourism and World Cup qualifying matches...
