A post about nothing in particular

Thought I'd post tonight since the internet just came back on, although little news to report. Just normal day-to-day activities Monday and Tuesday. Have spent the past two days...reading, split between the archive and the Instituto Dr. Jose Luis Mora. They have a great library and because I'm considering shifting the focus of my research a bit, it's requiring some legwork in the form of bibliographies and exploration of literature that exists. Unfortunately, it's in a different direction from the archive. I think I spent about 3 combined hours on public transportation on Monday alone. Did I mention it was crowded? Anyhow, not for the faint of heart or the claustrophobic.

I did however find two delicious pastry places in the close vicinity. The first, Wekin's bakery, serves delicious (what I think are buttermilk) donuts. They hands-down beat both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin for those donut aficionados reading. The second, Pasteleria Fenicia, is directly across the street (read: dangerous), with a distinctly Mediterranean flavor. Beff empanadas and other goodies, for which I have no names or very clear descriptors. Just think, sugary, sweet, and nutty with philo dough. Mmmm...

Hope to have some more updates with pics by this weekend. Will be a busy rest of the week before I head out for the volcanoes to do some hiking and get away from the crowds.

  1. Better than both Dunkin Donuts and Kripy Kreme suggests a potentially valuable franchise in our stateside future. A related thought for your consideration. In my 3rd World experience, locals seem always to have some great homemade sweets.

    Enjoying your on-scene commentary.
